What Kind of Food
Any good quality food will not have Corn listed in the first 5 ingredients. Corn is a cheap filler, makes the fish fat and is bad in general. The first ingredient should be fish, fish meal or other fish type product.
You can also feed your Koi any fresh fruit of veggies
Best Practices for Feeding
It is better to feed a few small meals a day rather than one or two larger meals. Koi do not have stomachs so what goes in one end is passing right through the other end. So, they could eat 24/7. The problem is if you over feed you stand a very good chance of polluting the water and that will bring on its own set of problems.
Nishikigoi, or Koi as they are more commonly known, are the national ornamental pond fish of Japan. They are relatives of the goldfish but are far more colourful and grow a great deal larger – sometimes up to 3 feet long garden ponds.
Koi originated back in 800AD where they were bred for food by isolated farmers in what is now the Niigata Prefecture, North West of Tokyo.
Eventually, colourful specimens were noticed in the early farmers. ponds and, from the 1800′s, breeding for colour became a highly competitive pastime among the Japanese peasant farming community.
These magnificent fish came to be referred to as ‘living jewels’ and are now enjoyed as much loved (and long lived) companion pets in garden ponds all over the world.
